DHI Hair Transplant is the process of extracting hair follicles from the donor area via utilizing a micro motor and then transplanting them into the receipt site using a pen-like device that contains a hollow needle. The first thing that comes into mind when we say DHI is usually the FUE method, but there are actually some differences between the 2 methods.

Dhi hair transplantation is one of the most preferred methods in hair transplantation today. With this technique, the hair transplantation process can be divided into two main phases, namely removal and transplantation. It is the process of placing the grafts collected with FUE or FUT extraction techniques, which are also applied in other methods, to the area to be planted with special devices.

In this application, also known as “Pen Technique”; Special equipment/pens are used that have special thin tips and transfer the graft directly to the skin when the grafts are inserted one by one and pressed. Again, this operation, which is performed with local anesthesia, requires more people to work in the team compared to other hair transplantation techniques, otherwise the procedure takes longer, so the number of grafts that can be transferred is limited in clinics that do not have a large team specialized on DHI.

The fact that the hair in the area to be transplanted can be transplanted without cutting, offers a distinct advantage for those who worry about their appearance after hair transplant due to their job, social status and/or other reasons. The pens used in this method started to be used in the Far East in the 1980s and have been developed and used since then.

Towards the middle of the 2000s, some surgeons in Europe, who could not get the results they wanted, saw the DHI planting method as salvation, and a new method perception was formed due to the fact that these surgeons introduced this method in Europe. There is no scientific study comparing DHI sapphire FUE methods, so it does not make much sense to favor one over the other.

Each method has its own advantages. It is not a suitable method for every patient. The suitability of the person for hair transplantation with DHI hair transplantation technique is determined under the control of a doctor after a detailed health history examination. Appropriate patient selection for this technique is very, very important.

Its application to patients who will need high graft numbers may cause the operation to take very long hours, and therefore the grafts that remain open for a long time may lose their quality completely or partially.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of DHI Hair Transplantation?

In DHI hair transplantation, there is less bleeding compared to the transplantation methods with open channels.

It is the choice of patients who want unshaven transplantation and worry about their cosmetic appearance.

Wound healing takes place a few days earlier after transplantation.

It is easier for inexperienced surgeons to angle and direct the hair.

If more than 3,000 grafts are to be transferred, other methods may yield more successful results.
